Whale
Discovery Research Program Summary
Each
year, between November and April, humpback whales can be seen in
Bahia de Banderas, an important breeding ground in the North
Pacific. In Ocean Friendly we have a tremendous passion for
Whales and we really enjoy to share the unforgettable experience
to meet this gentle giants in their natural environment.
During
the trips we record the behavior of the whales and photograph
the underside of their tails to identify them individually (photoidentification).
In this way we can keep track of the whales that come each
season, we can enrich the Catalog of Humpback Whales of Bahia de
Banderas and provide updated information of these species to the
scientific community. Through the interchange of this
information with other researchers in the North Pacific it has
been
possible to track migration routes of these whales between
their breeding grounds in Mexico and their feeding grounds in
Central California and further north.
From
our observations it can be concluded that over 300 humpback
whales come to Bahia de Banderas during the winter months. Also
it is noted that whales use specific sites in the bay for
specific behaviors such as singing and calving, this is
determined by the particular conditions of this sites such as
the bottom contours geometry and the water temperature.
