Kite Aerial Photography

Ocean-Friendly-Images-WEBKite Aerial Photography (KAP) is achieved by elevating a remote controlled camera over its subject with the use of a kite. The kite is used as a low altitude platform with the wind working as the lifting force.

HoldTheLineWebThe type of kite, the camera equipment and the rig to be used, as well as the maneuvers involved to obtain still photographs or video footage with this technique depend on its applications and the environmental conditions where the kite is to be flown.

We have developed a methodology to use KAP technique from fiberglass outboard motorboats to obtain low altitude high resolution images of marine resources and coastal environments. By testing Kite Aerial Photography to document marine resources and coastal environments we discovered diverse applications which include:

  • Behavioral documentation of Humpback Whales, Megaptera novaeangliae, and the whale watching activities in Banderas Bay, Mexico
  • Behavioral documentation of Gray whales, Eschrichtius robustus, in San Ignacio Lagoon, Mexico
  • Marine environment surveillance, coastline dynamics, environmental impact and environmental restoration surveys and remote sensing applications.
  • Archeological exploration
  • Coastal real estate development and marketing
  • Various art applications

Since January 2004 we have tested the applications of KAP on documenting and studying Humpback whales in Banderas Bay, Mexico, and Gray whales in San Ignacio Lagoon, Mexico. KAP has proved to be a valuable nonintrusive technique to document the behavior of whales with coastal habits in Mexico and hopefully worldwide. It has also helped to document the activity of whale watching and provide a perspective from which it is possible to understand the interaction of whales with humans.

Visit Ocean Friendly Images to learn how this unique form of photography might benefit your business or research program and check out the photo galleries below to view photos taken via the KAP process.
